In the scroll, there is no sense of terror at all—Sazaeoni gently holds hands with a small shell child, giving the scene a warm, parent‑like charm. A turban shell sits atop the creature’s head, paired with a shaggy, hairy appearance that creates a distinctive silhouette.

栄螺鬼（さざえおに）は、各地の伝承では恐ろしい女性の妖怪として語られていますが、 百鬼夜行図では男性のようにも見える姿で描かれています。 しかし、その絵からは恐ろしさはまったく感じられず、 手をつないだ貝稚児とは親子のようにほほえましい雰囲気があります。 頭には名の通り栄螺が乗っており、毛むくじゃらの頭部が特徴的です。
