Yokai Doll : Azuki-Arai (Red Bean Washer) / 小豆あらい

Description

The Azuki-arai is a yokai said to appear near rivers or streams, where it makes a distinctive sound while washing red beans (azuki). It’s believed that the eerie sound lures people closer, only for them to slip and fall into the water or off a cliff. In some regions, however, Azuki-arai is considered a lucky spirit, and its folklore varies widely. In the yokai art book Ehon Hyaku Monogatari, which served as a reference for this piece, the story and illustration were created by different individuals. As a result, although the text describes a young boy, the illustration depicts an elderly figure.

説明

小豆あらいは、水辺で小豆を洗いながら独特の音を立てる妖怪で、その不気味な音に誘われた人が川や崖から滑り落ちてしまうといわれています。しかし、地方によっては縁起のよい妖怪とされることもあり、伝承はさまざまです。今回参考にした妖怪画集『絵本百物語』では、物語と挿絵が別々の人物によって制作されているためか、文章では小僧とされているのに対し、挿絵では老人のような姿で描かれています。
